Adventures with Daddy - Day 5

Day 5 – All Good Things…

Today was our last day in Florida. Another sunny but windy day. We didn't have to worry about sunburn....windburn was the problem.

We decided to be low key since the next day would be the long, long drive. So, we went to a nearby park. The park had a nice playground. J&S enjoyed themselves on the slides, tire swing, and rocking animals.

I talked with Mom and Dad about parenting approaches. We agreed parents that "hover" too much are annoying. Does a parent really need to climb onto the equipment with their child? After a few hours, we found a nice, sunny spot out of the wind for a picnic. A picnic without seagulls this time!

Then it was back tot he RV for our typical afternoon routine. We tried to put J&S down for a nap, but they were more interested in playing. Again, someone fell trying to climb into the bed. Since no one napped, Mom volunteered to walk them around the RV park to provide more quiet time. Dad and I watched some Canada vs. U.S. hockey and Purdue basketball. The "good guys" lost both games.

Everyone enjoyed another fabulous dinner. The adult men added more Famous Grouse to cap off the night. Otherwise, we went to bed early since I wanted to be on the road by 8 AM. Leaving the house at 8 AM means Dad must wake-up at 6 AM to get his toilette and breakfast finished before the girls woke up.

we had days whether i wasn't sure if we were windburned or sunburned too. based on the slight peel we (nathaniel's legs, kendal's cheeks) had... i'd say it was sunburn though.

parental hovering is called "helicopter parents" in my playgroup and i'd be one of those parents that annoy you.

when we go to playgrounds, my children don't leave my side unless i go with them. not by my choice, they do it on their own. they stick to me. if i walk away from the slides and sit down, they follow me. plus, i like playing with them. soon, they won't have a thing to do with me (i'll be SO uncool). i enjoy it for now... and i really don't care what the other parents think. i love my children and this is how we play!

If it makes you feel any better, Jon, the weather my visit (so far) hasn't been much better. We had a bit of sun on St. Pat's and yesterday; enough to lay out by the pool a bit. Of course, now that I am leaving Sarasota today to drive back up to Weeki Wachee, it's gonna be almost 80 here!

Oh, well...

Maybe not, Analee. Sounds like you are nearby so they fell comfortable and willing to play. Helping the kids exercise and explore is important so they can build confidence.

Parents that follow their kids on the equipment always at the ready to catch them if they fall to the extent that they interfere with other kids playing is annoying.

Example: Yesterday there was a Mom "duck walking" behind her kid with her hands under his butt as he walked along the equipment.

i/we actually help scared-ey pants kendal climb on things (teach him how to do things) and, well, so maybe i'm there to help miss brave holly not fall when she tries to do the fireman pole at 13 months. :)

kendal is so apprehensive with climbing things still (lingering developmental delay?) but he's getting better.

and, usually the play-spots around our parts are empty and under-used. so, there aren't bigger kids to "show them how" or in holly's case, force her down the slide - she hates them!

the good part is that it IS just us... i like to slide if no one is looking! i honestly don't think i've ever been to one around here that had more than one other child on it with us. :)
